Professor Micheál D. Scanlon

UL Michael Scanlon 049 (1).jpg

Principal Investigator at the Bernal Institute,
Professor in the Department of Chemical Sciences,
University of Limerick.

Professor Scanlon is an electrochemist and a leader in the field of  electrochemistry at polarised immiscible liquid|liquid or “soft” interfaces. In 2016, he was awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant, allowing him to develop a world-class laboratory to study polarised liquid|liquid interfaces for energy conversion and storage applications. Using polarised liquid|liquid interfaces, Professor Scanlon has pioneered new approaches to:

  • electrocatalysis of energy related reactions, such as oxygen reduction, hydrogen evolution, and water oxidation,

  • electrosynthesis of conducting polymer thin films and their nanocomposites,

  • bioelectrochemistry of a model enzyme (Cytochrome c),

  • interfacial self-assembly of porphyrin molecules and  metallic nanoparticles, and

  • electroanalytical chemistry of non-redox active molecules.
