Visiting Professor Prof. Michael S. Freund

We have had the pleasure of hosting Prof. Michael Freund from Dalhousie University, Canada, as a visiting Professor the past few weeks to develop polyoxometalate/conducting polymer nanocomposite thin films for supercapacitor applications. Super enjoyable collaboration, thanks for visiting Michael!

5th International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE)/Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Group Irish Regional Early Career Meeting

November 5th, 2022

We participated in the 5th ISE/RSC Irish Regional Early Career Meeting in Electrochemistry at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB), Northern Ireland, with oral presentations by Nataly and Nicolás and a poster presentation by Andrés. Micheál was as a co-organiser of this conference, along with Dr Paul Kavanagh and Scott Place from QUB, Dr James Rohan from the Tyndall National Institute, Cork, and Dr Michelle Browne from Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, Germany). Andrés and Nataly also chaired sessions during this highly enjoyable meeting.

Dualflow kick-off meeting

Micheál travelled to Aalto University, Finland, for the DUALFLOW consortium kick-off meeting. Micheál, Prof. Pekka Peljo and Prof. Kathryn Toghill (in the lower picture) are all alumni of Prof. Hubert Girault’s group at EPFL, Switzerland, where they overlapped as postdoctoral researchers from 2011 to 2014. This consortium provides them with an extremely exciting opportunity to work together on a collaborative project once more.

Visiting PhD student Madjid Tarabet

Thanks to PhD student Madjid Tarabet, supervised by Dr Grégoire Herzog and Prof. Manuel Dossot at LCPME, Université de Lorraine, France, for visiting our group over the past 2 weeks. We are excited to be be part of the collaborative French-Irish IEA CharmITIES project to develop in situ Raman and SERS capabilities at a polarised liquid|liquid interface.

1st Regional Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE)

At the 1st Regional ISE held in Prague, Czech Republic, we presented 6 oral presentations by Bren, Alonso, Andrés, Angelika, Nataly and Nicolás. Angelika also presented a poster in our first opportunity to interact with an in-person ISE audience since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

We were very active at ECASIA held at the University of Limerick with 5 oral presentations by Micheál, Alonso, Nataly, Nicolás and Kamil. Micheál  also chaired a session.

Sincere thanks to Prof. Robert A.W. Dryfe (University of Manchester, U.K.) for acting as External Examiner, Dr Emmet O’Reilly (Department of Chemical Sciences) for acting as the Internal examiner, and Prof. Theresa Curtin (Department of Chemical Sciences) for acting as the Chairperson. Rob is PhD #2 from our group, and a major driving force behind our conducting polymer work. Thanks for all your brilliant work Rob!!

Andrés Moves On

Andrés has secured a top-class postdoctoral position in Sweden and leaves us after 5 and a half years! We hope he enjoys his aran sweater and Ireland rugby scarf to remind him of the good times in Limerick and Cork.
